ADATEPE VILLAGE

Adatepe village, which is surrounded by olive tres and pine forests, is located on the far west slopes of mythological Mt.Ida. Besides the diversity of its rich flora and fauna, Ida is also well known for its high level of oxygene. Adatepe village is under protection as a natural and a historical heritage site.

Turks and Greeks lived together here until the end of WWI . However, the history of the village traces back to hundreds of years ago and the altar of Zeus located near the village is a great evidence for the historical background of the human settlement in the village.

Today, the Ottoman mosque of the village and the tomb stones of its cemetery are counted to be the witnesses of the history. Unfortunately, the Church and the Greek cemetery existed until 1940s, but lost in time.

Some elderly locals stil remember the days when the village was populated by 400 households and 8 pubs, 2 butchers, 6 groceries, 1 draper, 1 blacksmith, 3 barbers, 1 lighter, 2 tailors, 3 olive oil factories, 1 bakery, 1 reading-hall, 1 guest-hall, 1 committee hall and a cinema functioning.

Today, there are only 28 housholds in Adatepe. Olive farming and stock-breeding are the primary occupations in the village.

SARIKIZ: Kazdağı is the setting for legends not only in mythology but also in the modern day. Among the many legends and stories that are told among the Turkmen people of the region is the one about "Sarıkız" (The blonde girl). Sarıkız was a beautiful and good hearted girl from the village of Güre in Edremit. But those jealous of her started malicious rumours about the girl. The rumours spread and her father, thinking she had lost her virginity, took her and some geese to the peak of Kazdağları and left her and the geese to fend for themselves. After a while the father got curious and decided to see what Sarıkız was up to where he had left her. He found her. When he wanted to take a wash before praying he asked his daughter to fetch some water. Sarıkız reached her hand across the mountain and filled her receptacle with water from the sea and handed the water to her father. The father realised that his daughter Sarıkız had become a saint. However, Sarıkız, realising that her secret had become known, died on the spot. The father was deeply saddened by this and also dies on the next peak ahead.Turkmen villagers refer to the spot where Sarıkız died as Sarıkız Tepesi (Hill) and the area where the father died as Baba Dağı (Father Hill).
Every year the Turkmen of the Kazdağları climb to Sarıkız Tepesi and sacrifice sheep and cook them in a feast to be enjoyed all together. In Hellenic mythology, Priam's son Paris was left on Mount Ida and looked after geese and Sarıkız and the geese doing the same bring these two stories together.

Vergillius, telling about Troyan War with its details and mentioning about Antandros, he expressed that the timbers made from the trees in İda Mountain were used for ship construction and its famous to have been spread to the antique world..

The ground, whose fertility increased by Selinos(Pergamon) and Kestel(Keitos) Streams running from the two sides of the hill, located Acropolis, into Bakırçay (Kalkos) River, provided it to be one of the favourite cities of Antique Period. The city, aparted two by Pergamon Stream(Selinos), with the natural sources and the plains around the streams is now extended until where is now called Musalla Cemetery. The acropolis’s sharp shoulders 392.3 m. high aren’t affected by the immigration in terms of the city is away from the sea. However being nearer to Pitane(Çandarli) and Dikili Gulf, it’s also connected with The King Road by the road following Kaiko Valley in the west, reaching to Akhisar(Thyateria) and this used the city for its importance
